Join Us in Worship at Maynardville Church of Christ
Maynardville Church of Christ is a non-denominational church in Maynardville, TN, following the example set by the Bible. Our congregation is autonomous, with elders overseeing while deacons and ministers serve the congregation. We believe in embodying the spirit of unity and fellowship in the New Testament Church.
What Is the Church of Christ?
The church found in the Bible is referred to by various names in the New Testament. At Maynardville Churches of Christ, follow the Bible example in Romans 16:16: “… The churches of Christ salute you.”
Non-Denominational Church
As a non-denominational church, we believe that the church is the body of Christ and should not be divided into denominations. Denominations are not found in the Bible. Such division is condemned according to 1 Cor. 1:10-13 and 1 Cor. 3:3-4, .
Our Goal
Our goal is to be the church found in the Bible, rejecting all the confusion and division that men have added since the church's founding. We strive to be known only as Christians,” as the disciples in the Bible were identified, as stated in Acts 11:26.
Autonomy of Local Congregations
The Churches of Christ are autonomous congregations. Elders provide oversight and leadership roles while deacons and ministers serve the congregation, as detailed in Acts 14:23 and Phil. 1:1.
History of the Church of Christ
The church has existed as the body of Christ since the apostles first preached the gospel, as recorded in the Book of Acts. Those who are saved are added to the church (the body of Christ—Acts 2:41, Eph. 5:23).
Warning of Distortion in Gospel Truth
The apostle Paul warned elders he met with in Ephesus that a “falling away” would occur from among the eldership as men perverted the gospel's truth. (Acts 20:28-30)
The Path to Salvation and the Book of Life
Whoever understands, believes, and obeys the gospel as revealed in God’s inspired Word will have their sins washed away by the blood of Christ. The names of the saved are added to God’s Book of Life. (1 Cor. 15:1-4, Rom. 1:16, 6:17-18, Rev. 21:27)
Commitment to Following the Biblical Pattern
The Maynardville Church of Christ follows the inspired Bible pattern as much as possible. If the church is practicing something not found in the Scriptures, then it must stop. If the church learns of something missed or misunderstood, then we, as Christians must accept it and follow Christ’s instruction. (Luke 6:46, Matt. 7:2-23)
The Reformation Movement
The “Reformation Movement,” led by people such as Martin Luther (Lutheranism), John Calvin (Calvinism), John Knox (Presbyterian), Thomas Cranmer (Anglican), and John Smyth (Baptist), was a rejection of the Catholic church’s doctrine. Issues such as paying for indulgences (money for forgiveness) and “doing works of atonement” were two major factors in the split. While a step in the right direction, this resulted in the division found in America’s “Christian denominations” today.
The Restoration Movement
The “Restoration Movement” in America was another step toward restoring the biblical church. For example, Thomas and Alexander Campbell left the Presbyterian church over the issue of immersion as baptism. They joined the Redstone and Mahoning Baptist Associations but left those as well to move closer to “the church of the Bible, Christians only” belief. Others soon joined the restoration movement.
What Does the Church of Christ Believe?
BIBLICAL AUTHORITY
We believe that the Bible is the sole source of religious authority. We adhere to the principle of "Speak where the Bible speaks and be silent where the Bible is silent." We do not add to or take away from God's Word. (Rev. 22:18-19)
WEEKLY COMMUNION
The Maynardville Church of Christ practices open communion, known as the "Lord's Supper," to remember Christ's sacrifice. They observe this weekly, following the biblical example. (Matt. 26:26-30, John 6:53, Acts 20:7, 1 Cor. 11:23-26)
EVANGELISM AND MISSION WORK
We follow Christ's instruction and are committed to preaching and teaching the gospel to all who will listen. (Mark 16:15-16)
BAPTISM BY IMMERSION
We believe that baptism is to be conducted through immersion. They teach that baptism is for those old enough to understand, believe, and obey the gospel. (Mark 16:16, Acts 8:38)
WORSHIP PRACTICES
Our non-denominational church believes in gathering for worship on the Lord's Day, the first day of the week. They do so to give God what He asked from them as a congregation and to encourage each other's faithfulness. (Heb. 10:25, Eph. 5:19)
Congregational singing is conducted in a cappella without the use of musical instruments. The term "a cappella" means "according to the church," and the New Testament church worshipped without instruments under the apostle's guidance.
